Our UK distributor TIME+SPACE caught up with the library's producer Eranga Jayawansa to get the lowdown on the creation of Beats from the East. Here's what he said:

Eranga Jayawansa Hi Eranga, please could you tell us about your musical background?
I started off as a DJ moved on to audio engineering, sound design & finally into music production.

You started the recordings for Beats from the East 7 years ago, why did it take so long to produce?
The project started when I was in Los Angeles experimenting with sound design and production. Beat making was what I was most passionate about then. I was also inspired by the ethnic percussive sounds I’ve heard in my native country and I wanted to use those sounds with the modern electronic beats to create something unique. I decided to go back home to start recording for the project. When I started working with local artists on production and got involved heavily after a while, I started to produce more Hip Hop and Rnb music, because it was more popular. The beats project not only delayed because of that but also changed direction.

Did you always intend for the library to be so unique in the sense that it combines ethnic percussion with the latest technology?
Percussion always adds something extra which always complements well with the electronic sounds. Since we had access to the best studios and percussionists in Sri Lanka it was a pleasure to experiment and add the percussion to most of the beats I have made.

Could you tell us more about this technology you used?
I’ve used everything from common 808 and 909s to rare sound FX programs such as Symbolic Sound Kyma. I was also much fascinated with stutter edits back then. There are many examples of hihats broken into 128ths to 256ths in the early examples. Also a few examples of complex algorithms like additive re synthesis from kyma where the frequency of the percussion has morphed to something like a voice etc or a complex Reaktor patch can be evident. As I evolved into doing much more musical and commercial work I stopped concentrating on excessive editing and FX. When doing the Hip Hop Rnb samples I was focusing on more conventional things such as recording / mixing etc. It was important to use good quality preamps / interfaces and processing gear and a few good drum machines to get quality sounds.

Were there any challenges that you faced during the recordings?
Most of the Hip Hop and RnB beats were tested mixed with music and vocals later to make sure the beats sound good not only on its own. EQing Compression and mixing wasn’t as fun as making the beats. Since I was doing lots of production work at the time so most beats had to be used for production with music anyway. The timing was also important. Sometimes kicks need to hit a few milliseconds earlier than the bass or the snare timing needs a bit of offset to allow space to the rest of the sounds in a track. Also the tuning of the kick drums was something I was serious about, it was quite a challenge sometimes because the beat can sound really good on its own but right after adding some music and some bass it could sound horribly wrong.
Also recording dual surfaced percussive instruments was always a challenge. when recording something like a tabla you need 2 mics to capture the sound qualities of the 2 surfaces. This sometimes also meant they needed to be recorded into individual tracks and later edited.

What are the highlights of the library for you?
The highlight of the library is definitely the Hip Hop and RnB beats collections. These were done in the latter stage of the project. With my experience working as a producer/engineer with many local Hip Hop and RnB artists I wanted to make sure these beats sounded well enough to any producer who is looking for a quality beat to fit right into their final mix or for a songwriter who is looking for a good beat to be inspired to start writing.
