What are Virtual Sound Modules?
Virtual Sound Modules (or VSMs) are huge professional sample libraries by ZERO-G that are supplied already interfaced with a very powerful NATIVE INSTRUMENTS software sampler, and are therefore immediately usable as a plug-in with all major sequencers, on both MAC and PC.
Each VSM is like a 'virtual instrument' (or so-called 'ROMpler') and each is based on a different professional sample library. You can play it live, or drive it with your MIDI recordings. VSMs can greatly simplify your studio setup and your music making by removing the need to have a separate sampler at all. Effectively, you could say that VSMs instantly turn your computer into a top-line sampler, full of professionally crafted presets and awesome sounds.
A VSM brings together two completely different tools, a professional sample library and a plug-in virtual instrument with which to play back, shape and manipulate those samples. A real equivalent to this virtual instrument would be a powerful top-level hardware (playback only) sampler with an internal hard drive that contained a huge professional sample library.
Since the late 80's it has been the norm to buy a sampler in order to read and play sample library discs but with VSMs it's not necessary to own a sampler to get started, because a powerful playback sampler is provided with the sample library.
The VSMs themselves do not allow you to import your own sounds, or sounds from other libraries, but you CAN do that if you purchase NI's superb KONTAKT software sampler because that sampler can also load the sounds from the VSMs (Note: to load the sounds from VSMs into Kontakt you will need Kontakt version 2 or later).
The simplicity and efficiency of this family of products is fundamental and groundbreaking. Even with just a laptop computer, a basic sequencer and a VSM or two, you can create great music, produce and mix it, and release it in truly professional quality.
Frequently Asked Questions about Virtual Sound Modules:
Q: Which NI software "powers" the Zero-G sample libraries in your Virtual Sound Modules? A: All the earlier releases are powered by either a special version of NI Kompakt called "Kompakt Instrument" or by a special version of NI Intakt called "Intakt Instrument". Whereas, the newer title PHAEDRA is powered by the newer NI engine "Kontakt Player 2".
Q: Do your "powered by NI" products use the NI "Direct from Disk Extension". If so, is it built in, or should I download it and install it? A: Yes, they do use the Direct from Disk extension. This extension is built-in to all the recent libraries. The only library for which you would need to download the DFD extension is Morphology. The extension is downloadable from our website - click HERE to get it.
Q: If I have a full version of NI Kompakt already installed, can I load your instrument patches and samples from your Kompakt-based Zero-G Virtual Sound Modules into that application (e.g. from Morphology or Nostalgia)? A: Yes, you can load both patches or individual samples from one of or Kompakt-powered libraries into the full version of NI Kompakt. Likewise, you can load both patches or individual samples from one of our Intakt-powered libraries into the full version of NI Intakt. So you can effectively make your own patches from the samples in the library. Furthermore, if you have the full version of NI's top-of-the-range sampler KONTAKT you can load both our Kompakt- & Intakt-powered libraries into it, and you can load our Kontakt-Player-2-powered library PHAEDRA into it as well.
Q: Do I lose any features if I load your sounds into the full versions of NI Kompakt/Intakt, as compared with using the Kompakt/Intakt Instrument supplied by yourselves? A: No, the Zero-G patches were either made in NI Kompakt or NI Intakt so they should play exactly the same in the full versions.
Q: Or do I need to install your own version of Kompakt/Intakt (i.e. "Kompakt Instrument" or "Intakt Instrument") as well? A: You will need to go through the installation procedure to install the Zero-G Intakt or Kompakt library at least once and register the library but you then do not need to use our version if you have the full version of NI Kompakt, NI Intakt or NI Kontakt installed.
Q: If I have several of your Zero-G Virtual Sound Modules, do I need to install your own version of Kompakt or Intakt for each one or can they all be used in a single copy of your version of Kompakt or Intakt? A: You will need to install and register each separate Zero-G Kompakt- or Intakt-powered library.
Q: And can they all be used in a full version of NI Kompakt? A: The Zero-G Kompakt-powered libraries can be used in the full version of NI Kompakt and the Zero-G Intakt-powered libraries can be used in the full version of NI Intakt. If you have the full version of the flagship NI KONTAKT sampler you can load both the Zero-G Kompakt-powered & Intakt-powered libraries into it (and Kontakt Player 2 libraries such as Phaedra).
Q: Are your NI-powered products compatible with Mac INTEL computers? A: In most cases not immediately - you need to download the FREE KONTAKT PLAYER or use KONTAKT. The only title that is fully and immediately compatible with Mac Intel is PHAEDRA which uses the newer KONTAKT PLAYER 2 interface. For all our earlier NI-powered titles, yes you can still access the full sound libraries on Mac Intel - for info on your options please click the link on this page at above right (in the "Related Info" box).
