"...perhaps the best feature is the playing and, more specifically, the attitude provided by the loops. This is first class. At lower tempos, there is plenty here that might suit some hip-hop or R&B productions, provided that they were of the more grungy variety. At mid-tempos, there is material that would work in a rock or funk context – although you might want to add an ‘alt-‘ to both of these genres, as the playing is suitably (and very inspiringly) quirky. At higher tempos, there are loops that would work in harder-edged electroncia or dance styles (think the Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy) with enough going on to make things sound aggressive and a little extra on tap via Intakt’s Lo-fi, Distortion, or Filter processing if required. All in all, these breakbeats are inspirational and have plenty of character... if I could give The Operating Table two ratings then it would be five for the quality of the content but perhaps three for the quantity – there was some great material, but I was left wanting more. Four stars it is then. Overall, however, if you like your breakbeats to have attitude, then these loops are certainly worth a spin."

OVERVIEW
This unbelievably flexible groove instrument features a library of breaks with irresistible feel and compelling usability, which, although they derive their feel and sonic basis from live drumming technique, are very creatively processed, and were performed by one of four featured drummers (Emre Ramazanoglu or Dave Westlake, with contributions from Jack Yglesias and Steve Ashmore). The recordings were made in London at Metropolis, Padded Cell, Walworth Cage, Triangle, and Line of Flight. This project was conceived as a much more powerful alternative to "genre-based" sample libraries, offering sample-accurate live drum loops with an equal emphasis on diversity of sound through extremely creative processing techiques, but with the real feel of a human performance. Many performances changes and evolve, providing multiple loop variations. Real kits are the foundation of the sound of each break, although some incorporate additional live triggered analog drum machines or software triggered sounds. Each bar of each break has been designed to loop perfectly as a 1 bar break (sample accurate BPM), or as part of the whole evolving sequence. Emre Ramazanoglu is a London Based session drummer and producer whose recent credits include The Prodigy, William Orbit, Tricky, Bobby Gillespie, Tom Middleton and Sikth. Dave Westlake is the drummer with the Sneaker Pimps and session drummer for Medieval Babes amongst others.

THE OPERATING TABLE includes a stunning new state-of-the-art plug-in audio engine/interface from NATIVE INSTRUMENTS which is specifically designed for rhythmic loop playback, manipulation, and mayhem.
The convenient one-screen interface is based on (and provides all the sound manipulation tools of) NI?s new INTAKT sampler, and features tremendous sound shaping abilities without disrupting the creative flow, including a first-class multimode filter, an envelope follower, two LFOs, effects, and more. The loops have been set up so that they can be automatically synced to tempo, either via the Beat Machine or the Time Machine. The Beat Machine has loops divided into their individual hits (slices) which means they can be played at a wide range of tempos without any change in pitch. It also allows the user to give each hit individual settings for pitch, playback direction, pitch envelope, amp envelope, distortion, delay, and more; a MIDI file of each loop can be easily exported so that groove, accent, and feel can be manipulated in any host sequencer. The Time Machine time-stretches or compresses loops in real time. Not only can you sync, stretch, and pitch the loops, but also filter, effect and modulate them as well! A powerful sound-shaping filter, flexible envelopes, syncable LFOs, and distortion, syncable delay, and lo-fi effects can inject even more energy and individuality into the loops. Since the software interface is based on the KONTAKT engine, working with it is fast, easy, and it sounds great!

IMPORTANT: To avoid confusion, we would like to point out that the Native Instruments software powering this product is not a "PLAYER" but an INSTRUMENT. The software included is a complete Virtual Instrument called INTAKT INSTRUMENT, which is a specialized and streamlined version of the NI KONTAKT sampler and also uses the KONTAKT audio engine. The INTAKT INSTRUMENT should not be confused with the much more basic "KONTAKT PLAYER" interface as included with some other companies' products, which is simply a 'player' of libraries in Kontakt format and has very little editing functionality. That is obviously very different from the INTAKT INSTRUMENT, which includes the most used controls from KONTAKT and even many powerful new features, and allows massive editing of the included sound library. The INTAKT INSTRUMENT which powers THE OPERATING TABLE is a much more powerful creative tool than the "KONTAKT PLAYER".
